🤱What I am Actually Using for My Baby as a Second-Time Mom
Becoming a mom for the second time feels very different.
With my first baby, I remember wanting to be fully prepared. I researched everything, added so many items to my registry, and honestly… I thought I needed it all.
But I’ve learned that babies don’t need much.
And more importantly, mamas don’t need more things, they need more support, more rest, and more presence.
So instead of focusing on having everything, I’m focusing on having what truly matters.
This is a list of the baby essentials I’m choosing this time around: simple, intentional, and based on real life as a mom.
If you’re preparing for your baby, I hope this helps you feel less overwhelmed and more grounded in what really matters 🤍

🧺 My Must-Have Baby Essentials
These are the things I truly use daily and wouldn’t want to be without. I’m sharing my personal experience and opinions, and I’m open to recommendations and comments, feel free to leave yours on the comments section below!

🧼 Diapering Essentials
This is one area where you’ll want things easily accessible.
Diapers + wipes - of course! This time I’m way more aware of what these two are made, so after looking for fair prices + clean ingredients, I'll choose these brands for the new baby: DIAPERS | WIPES
Diaper cream - I listed it here to say that I didn’t actually use any with my first, and you’ll probably not need it too. I used something way crunchier that my family has always used on babies bottoms: Corn starch! Yes! It’ll keep your baby dry when needed, just apply some in the area and you’ll see you’ll never have rashes. I got a cheap bottle with littles holes to make it easier to apply and that was it! This time I’ll do the same, but I also got this super clean Baby Booty Balm from a local mama business from a raffle so I might be trying it if we need to.
Changing pads - Portable changing pads are a game changer. I like having a few around the house so I’m not running back and forth all day, and they’re much more affordable too.
Changing station with all together - Nothing fancy! I personally only use 2 of this little basket that I keep on both floors with the same essential things.
Diaper pail - It is a must at least for me, my oldest is 2 and a half and still poops in a diaper so I still use it every day. It definitely helps keep the smell more contained. I like adding a good smelling soap inside to help with spreading the smell when you open it (it can be the worst smell in the world trust me lol). This is the refill I’ve been buying since he was born
Function over aesthetics here, make your life easier.
🍼 Feeding Essentials
Whether breastfeeding or bottle feeding, keeping it simple is key.
Burp cloths - (you’ll use these constantly). I chose this for being Organic Cotton.
A few bottles - (even if breastfeeding) Choosing the right bottle is essential for a good oral development, the one I use and I know it’s approved by Myofunctional therapists is the Dr. Brown one. And I’m choosing glass this time. I’ll be using them for my husband or other support people to feed the baby with my pumped milk.
Nursing pillow - (if breastfeeding) I didn’t invest on one last time and I was always struggling with positioning the baby for feeding, especially during the first months. So this time this was a must for me.
Breast mill collectors - these are one of those simple things that make a big difference. When you’re breastfeeding, it’s very common to have letdown on the opposite side while baby is nursing, and instead of that milk being lost, a milk collector gently suctions onto the breast and catches it for you so you can save it for later or freeze it.
Breast pump - A breast pump can be really helpful, whether you’re building a freezer stash, relieving engorgement, or just giving yourself a little flexibility so other people can also feed your baby with your milk - that’s why you wanna have some bottles available too. I have a portable one from my last baby and I’ll be using the same one, but there are tons of options out there, you can choose the best for you and your routine.
Breast milk storage bags - they are so helpful when you start collecting or pumping milk. They allow you to safely store your milk in the fridge or freezer, keeping everything organized and easy to use later on. I’m choosing this one this time because it seems easier to pour the milk into the bottles after unfreezing them. See the CDC’s Storage and Preparation of Breast Milk Guidelines.
A bottle warmer - I know this doesn’t sound like a must, but since I plan on coming back to teaching some classes a week and I wanna keep giving the baby my breast milk, I’ll be working on my milk stash and we’ll need a quick and safe way to warm up the milk after unfreezing it. This is also a really good investment if you plan on bottle feeding or can’t breastfeed, so you can warm up the formula bottles. I’m choosing this brand because it’s the best option I found, being portable, faster to use, made of stainless steel, easy to clean AND having a built-in sterilization system.
You don’t need a cabinet full of feeding products, just the basics to support you.
👶 Clothing (Keep it simple)
You don’t need a huge wardrobe for your newborn.
Zip-up sleepers (life-changing, especially for night changes). I just can’t with button ones or the ones that are hard to put on and off.
A few onesies - Tip: I’m choosing comfort over “cute outfits” this time. Easy changes = happier mama.
I don’t use hats, socks and gloves, unless it’s really cold of course. I believe in the importance of letting them feel the environment around them. I leave my baby only in diapers as much as possible, so we can do as much skin-to-skin contact as we can, especially in the beginning!
Soft blankets - preferably organic cotton, linen or another clean material.
đź’¤ Sleep Essentials
Sleep is everything, for both baby and mama!
Safe sleep space (bassinet or crib) - I’ll be using a bassinet again for as long as we feel comfortable and safe. My goal after my second is a little older is to put both boys to sleep together in their room, on the same bed. Let’s see how it goes!
Baby nest/lounger (Organic Cotton) - Totally a must for me because we used it so much with my first baby. It kept him safe and cozy, but it’s only recommended for supervisioned naps. I also used it on the first months - while he still didn’t move much - to keep him safely on the couch while I was doing something in the living room.
Swaddles - I loved using it on the first months to keep them warm and help them with Moro/startle reflex. I stopped using after some months because my boy seemed to hate them…
White noise machine with light- I got this in my last registry and I used it every night because of how easy it is to turn the light on and off. You just tap it on top and it makes so much easier, especially since I didn’t have a nightstand lamp at that time. I’ll definitely use it again to make my life easier at night. Ps: we couldn’t stand the white noise so I used this only because of the light lol
🚶‍♀️ On-the-Go Essentials
Getting out of the house (even just for a walk) can be so supportive for your mental health.
Baby carrier - Whether at home or out and about, a baby carrier was one of my most-used items with my first. I wore him while cooking, doing chores, going for walks, running errands, literally everywhere. This time, I know I’ll be using it even more because I’ll be chasing a toddler too!
I received a new one as a gift (shoutout to my amazing students!), and I still have two I loved from my first: a lighter Ergobaby for everyday use and a sturdier one for longer walks and hikes.
It’s truly one of those essentials that makes life easier while keeping your baby close and connected.
Easy, lightweight stroller - With my first, I chose the Evenflo stroller because it was one of the most affordable options with really good reviews, and it ended up being such a great decision! I still use it with my toddler, and I’ll be using it again with this baby.
What I love most is how easy it is to use. You can switch between the car seat or bassinet depending on what you need, which makes it really practical for everyday life. And the bassinet also turns into a toddler seat, which is what I’ve been using lately. It’s super light, spacious, practical and really easy to use.
I’m also considering getting their expandable stroller if I feel like I need it later on, but for now I’m keeping things simple and using what I already have.
🌿 Mom essentials (Don’t skip this!)
One thing I’ve learned is that while we spend so much time planning and preparing for baby, we often forget to prepare for mom.
And honestly… this might be the most important part!
Taking care of yourself postpartum (physically, mentally, and emotionally) matters so much more than having all the baby items!
Because truly, happy mama = happy baby.
I’ll be sharing a separate blog post with my favorite mom essentials and postpartum must-haves, so stay tuned for that.
🤍 A Gentle Reminder for Moms
It’s so easy to get caught up in lists, registries, and “must-haves.”
But the truth is…
your baby doesn’t need a perfect setup.
They need a regulated, loved, and supported mama.
This time, I’m choosing less pressure, less clutter, and more intention.
More slow mornings, more skin-to-skin, more presence.
And I hope you feel empowered to do the same!
Thank You for Being Here!
If there’s one thing I hope you take from this, it’s that you don’t need more. You just need what truly supports you and your baby.
Motherhood isn’t about having everything perfectly prepared. It’s about slowing down, trusting your intuition, and allowing yourself to be held in the process too.
Whether this is your first baby or your second (or third, or more lol), you are allowed to keep things simple, intentional, and aligned with what feels right for you.
Thank you for being here, for supporting this space, and for being part of this beautiful community of mamas.
Because Together, We Are UNO 🤍
